My travel banjo design arose out of a custom commission for a good sounding & playing, yet packable, 5 string banjo. The success of that one-off and the additional banjo orders it spawned convinced me to offer it as a standard model.

Although there are quite a few travel size banjos out there, they are almost all short scales. To me, this renders them as novelties, rather than a natural extension of your favourite banjo, scale and setup you are accustomed to.

In addition, most travel banjos use heavy materials

hardware and construction- although they have short necks, they are still quite heavy. The exception are those with nylon strings, which generally lack in tone & volume.

I base my banjo around a quality Remo tunable 8" (20cm) diameter hand drum. This offers several advantages. The 8" diameter represents a reasonable compromise in size to achieve good tone and volume without excessive weight. It also comes pre-assembled, which allows me to focus my time & effort on good neck construction and overall setup. Lastly, the FiberSkyn Remo heads stay in tune well, are durable and are readily available if replacement is required.

I've collected quite a few banjos over the years and they all have their special qualities. This one is as accurately built and laid out as either of my Gibsons or my wife's Bart Reider. To become a real favorite for me, a banjo has to be easy to tune and has to stay in relative tune when I move the capo around. The neck accuracy and setup on this banjo is right on the money.
